After studying violin under the tutelage of Achille Rivarde and composition under Gustav Holst at the Royal College of Music, British conductor and composer Anthony Collins performed as first viola for both the London Symphony Orchestra and Royal Opera House Covent Garden Orchestra.

After resigning his career as a orchestral musician in 1936, he focused his attention on developing his talent as a conductor, and made his debut leading the London Symphony Orchestra in Edward Elgar‘s Symphony No. 1 two years later. He would later employ his prodigious skill in recording his own symphony compositions as well as his Hollywood film scores.

The early 1950s recording of the London Symphony’s Sibelius Cycle he conducted “… is yet to be bettered” opined a contemporary review by the Sunday Telegraph (30 August 2009). Anthony was actually one of the first proponents and classical interpreters of Sibelius‘ work at the podium. I myself developed a keen ear for his music at an early age, particularly at hearing Finlandia for the first time, which was a rapturous experience for me.

In 2006 an album was produced of the BBC Concert Orchestra‘s performance of his compositions in the British Light Music genre. Included in the medley is the ever-popular and delightful Vanity Fair . Much of his recorded music has been lost over the years, so we’re grateful the BBC chose this production to remember his musical legacy.

In 1938 Anthony gained his first credit in the motion picture industry for his music score of Sixty Glorious Years , a British film directed by Herbert Wilcox. During the ensuing decades, he earned dozens of filmography credits for his work as original composer, arranger and/or conductor of film score music. For three successive years (1940 – 1942) he received Academy Award nomination for Best Music and Original Score for movies directed by Herbert Wilcox.

Operatic contralto Anne Collins also studied at the Royal College of Music, first as a cellist before operatic voice training. Her singing career spanned nearly four decades after her debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in 1975. Her vast operatic repertoire included roles in several Gilbert & Sullivan operas, such as singing the role of Dame Carruthers in Yeoman of the Guard.
